Volunteer in Ghana

Volunteering in Ghana is very popular.   Known as ‘The Gateway to Africa’, Ghana is a popular first choice for volunteers who have never stepped onto the African continent before.  It’s not too far to travel to for those travelling from the UK – some 7 hours, there’s no jet lag as it’s in the same time zone as the UK (one hour difference in the summer months), it’s cheap to get around and buy street food,  the people are warm,  friendly and very spiritual, and the country stable.  The weather is tropical and temperatures stay between 28 and 33 degrees with frequent rail falls to relieve the humidity.

Volunteer teaching in Ghana

Ethos of placements

Our partners run sustainable projects where you, as a volunteer, can make a valuable contribution with your work.  They want to empower the local children and adults so that they can have a better future, play more sports, do better at school, so that adults can learn new skills and animals are protected before it’s too late. At the same time, you will have an amazing experience getting to know the Ghanaian way of life, culture, music, food, spirituality and maybe slowing down a bit “A la Ghanaian” to appreciate all that is around you!

The Placements

We can offer you a variety of volunteering placements in Ghana with our NGO partners based in Accra, the capital.  Namely:

Sports coaching rugby, football (soccer), netball, hockey, boxing, basketball, tennis

Teaching – either at a pre-school, primary school for disadvantaged children or secondary school

Medical –  Shadowing a doctor, nurse or midwife at a hospital

Dentistry – Shadowing a dentist either at the hospital or in a clinic

Primates conservation- Working with monkeys in animal conservation

Animal welfare

Sewing – Teaching the ladies how to make fashions in a women’s empowerment program

DIY skills (carpentry, plumbing, electrics) or barbering in a men’s empowerment program

After School program –    Helping the kids with their homework in an after school program and providing them with some fun activities

Physiotherapy

Outreach program – helping promote good health practise in the community.

It would be possible to combine some of these placements, such as the teaching in the disadvantaged children’s school with coaching a sport, which is generally after school or with the after school homework club.

Explore Ghana at the weekends

At the weekends, the NGO can organise for you, and take you on,  trips so you can explore Ghana:   to Cape Coast, Milly’s Beach, the Volta Region or the Mole National Park.  Or you may prefer to organise your own trips.  Either way, they can point you in the right direction!
