Volunteering in a micro credit co-operative in Ecuador is not only a chance to practise your language skills but also a good life experience.  If you are interested in the world of Finance, Accountancy, Economics, Maths or Banking and you have good Spanish Language skills, then you could find volunteering in a micro credit co-operative very interesting, and it could certainly give you that different edge when it comes to job applications.

You will be assisting the existing staff in their small micro credit co-operative, located in a small and remote village up in the mountains.  You can help the customers with their applications, maybe accompany the staff when they go out and assess the projects, help with all the office procedures and maybe contribute to these and office systems.

It is important that you like being in a quiet and remote location with stunning views of the mountains and enjoy meeting these indigenous people who make their living in the mountains.

Volunteer Accommodation

You will stay with a local Spanish speaking family in their home and have your own room and a shared bathroom.  Meals will be taken at the house and you will need to take a packed lunch with you Monday to Friday.  You will need to walk down to a bus stop and catch a bus to the micro-finance centre and then catch the bus back home again at the end of the day.

Staying with a local family gives you the opportunity for total immersion into the language and culture of these lovely people.  There may be the opportunity to help the family with their crops and animals in your spare time.

Volunteering – spare time

Weekends need to be planned carefully and in advance so you can make the most of your time here.  If you take a bus or taxi down to Ibarra, you can then catch a bus and visit Otavelo, renowned for its colourful craft market, Cotacachi, famous for its leather, you could travel to Quito for the weekend, or the coast or the jungle in the Oriente.  There are waterfalls, caves, thermal springs, guided mountain walks…  Plenty to do!
