FOOTBALL COACHING AND TEACHING ENGLISH IN THE GALAPAGOS ON CRISTOBAL ISLAND
We recommend you combine this placement with helping to teach English in a local school
You will be based in the capital of the island (and, in fact, the capital of The Galapagos) called Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The Football coaching takes place Monday to Friday from 3pm to 5pm in a modern stadium with astroturf and a running track around the pitches in the middle.
This club has only been in operation for a short while but already has many members and an ambitious game plan. They have some local funding from businesses and would like to play other clubs on the mainland (referred to as ‘the continent” in The Galapagos!) They welcome assistant football coaches of both sexes to help their boys and take this club forward. Maybe a female football coach would encourage the girls to join too?
It would be fantastic if volunteers could bring out any equipment for the club – cones, bibs, old boots in good condition, football kits from clubs, footballs, pumps and whistles. Training dvds or any dvds for the kids to watch could also be useful.
You can combine this placement with English teaching and other subjects at a local school for children aged from 6 to 16, a short bus ride away. School generally starts at 7.30 and finishes at 1pm and we recommend that you combine these two placements for maximum exposure to the local culture and to develop your Spanish language skills.
Where you will stay
You will stay with a local Spanish speaking family in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and have a room which may be shared with another volunteer, shared bathroom and three meals a day provided.
Puerto Baqerizo Moreno is a quiet town with a seafront promenade and beach which the sea lions have taken over! There is an information centre, several cafes where you can get wi fi, several small hotels, laundry facilities, a few shops and many Tour Operators. According to the “Lonely Planet Guide” . Puerto Baquerizo Moreno “retains its sleepy, time-stands-still fishing village feel” a description which accurately describes the vibe of the place.
What to do whilst there
There are some great excursions such as to the Leon Dormido/Kicker Rock where you can snorkel first in what is sometimes called Charles Darwin Bay and then at the rock itself where you can see sharks resting! Other attractions are El Junco Lagoon, Puerto Grande, Puerto Chino. At certain times of the year, the island is known for its excellent surfing at El Canon and Tongo Reef. Visit one of the many Tour Operators and plan your weekends so you can see all that is on offer.
