Sports coaching (rugby, football, hockey, netball, cricket, swimming, tennis and frisbee), Teaching and Orphanage Work
Sports coaching, teaching and orphanage work in the townships of South Africa is a very rewarding experience and one where you will meet other volunteers from all around the world and make new friends for life.
The placement has the right balance of Work and Play. You work Monday to Friday and have the weekends off to have fun!
Check out this video from one of our volunteers Becca Howard:
You will be coaching, teaching or working with disadvantaged kids from the townships of Port Elizabeth on the Eastern Cape where a generation of parents have died from the HIV/AIDS pandemic and children are reared by an older sibling, granny or neighbour. Sport does not feature on the school curriculum and facilities are not always good but this charity has been providing much loved sports coaching for some years now thanks to the contribution of the volunteers.
You will be sharing the Volunteer House with many other like minded people and there is a swimming pool and fun bunk-house style accommodation. Sports coached are:
* Swimming (some months of the year)
* Ultimate Frisbee
You can either teach full time in a primary or secondary school or have a taster day whilst volunteering as a sports coach. This is a good opportunity for anyone who is already a teacher or if you are thinking of a career in teaching, a taster day or two would be a good experience for you.
You can either volunteer at an orphanage whilst staying at the volunteer house or sometimes, the orphanage is a long way away and has its own accommodation and you can stay there. It is a good opportunity for anyone already working in child care or contemplating a career in this field. Many of the children have HIV/AIDS themselves and you will be involved in administering their medication and providing them with lots of fun and stimulation.
