Teaching in Ghana
Teaching in a pre-school
Volunteer teaching in Ghana is a great way to experience this delightful country, meet the people, and travel around at the weekends visiting the Castles, parks, beautiful beaches (sadly not suitable for swimming) and soaking up the culture.
Teaching in the pre-school/nursery involved helping to teach the children basic literacy in the form of learning their alphabet, basic numbers, engaging in art and craft projects, playing with sand and water. The children are divided into small classroom sizes and have a walled area outside where they can play at break time and run around. When they are all at school, there are some 60 children.

The nursery children being given some clothes
The nursery is open all year round from early until late and the ideal time to volunteer would be from 10am until 4pm.

Teaching is the perfect experience for anyone interested in a career teaching nursery children or who loves sharing their writing and art skills with others.
This placement could be combined with sports coaching or teaching at the after school club.
Teaching in a school for disadvantaged children

School for disadvantaged children
Teaching in this primary school is a challenge because the school has a mixed age range as many children came to school late in life so are academically behind for their age.
You can either have a go at taking your own class – the Ghanaian teachers will give you plenty of support in showing you what could be taught or what is appropriate for the age and ability of the class. Or you could take children on a one-to-one basis and work with them and their problems. Many are unable to write so help with hand writing is very useful.

Classrooms are very colourful – children chilling out
Geography and art are not generally taught so any lessons in these subjects would be appreciated as would any art projects and practical projects.
Class times are 8am until 2pm, Monday to Friday and school carries on all year! There is a school bus that passes near the Volunteer House which you could catch in the mornings and also when you go home.
This placement could be combined with sports coaching in the afternoon or teaching in the after school club.
Teaching in a Secondary school

Volunteer teaching in a secondary school in Ghana!
This secondary school lacks colourful artwork on the walls and the teachers say they do not have resources for practical lessons. They welcome volunteers who want to teach any of the core subjects: English, Maths, Sciences but particularly Geography – which is not generally taught – music and art. You could make lessons fun for the children and provide them with some interesting new subjects.
Hours are from 8am until 2pm, Mondays to Fridays.
This placement could be combined with sports coaching in the afternoon or teaching at the after school club.
After school homework club
This centre in the middle of Labadi town is still under construction but at the moment has one room where the children can go after school and be supervised and off the street whilst they do their homework. There is also scope to do some after school activities with the children, as they occupy the room in waves according to their age group.
There are plans to build a library next door and the club welcomes any donations of suitable reference and reading books suitable for the children.
Hours are 4pm until 6pm, Mondays to Friday. This placement could be combined with another such as teaching in one of the schools in the mornings or football or boxing coaching in the morning, or working in animal welfare or conservation for primates also in the mornings.
The Volunteer House
Accommodation is at the Volunteer House in shared, single sex rooms with bunk beds and ensuite bathrooms.
Breakfast is light whilst lunch and dinner and bigger meals. You will get the opportunity to try lots of Ghanaian foods! Make sure you sample Jollof rice, Red Red and fried plantain!
Some volunteers have their lunch late on return to the Volunteer House whilst others buy themselves chicken and rice for £1/£2 whilst out and about.
